Laboratory testing helps healthcare providers assess health concerns, support diagnosis and monitor ongoing care. Depending on the requested test, a sample may include blood, urine or another specimen.

Testing works best as part of a clinical plan. Your healthcare provider determines which examinations are appropriate and reviews results alongside your symptoms, medical history and other findings.

Preparation varies between tests. Follow the instructions supplied for your examination; fasting is only needed when you are instructed to do so. Ask your healthcare provider before making any changes to your medications.
